Saltwater fishing is no joke, many people make careers off of fishing on the open ocean, and others live off the water. Saltwater fishing isn’t meant for any angler, and requires even more knowledge and equipment than any other type of fishing. Although saltwater fishing is fun and enjoyable, it is less of a sport and more of a profession. There are companies that own fishing boats that are responsible for supplying the restaurants and companies with a variety of fish. As you probably know already, the ocean is brutal and unforgiving. You will not be able to use most of the same equipment for freshwater fishing. And you will need stronger and bigger boats, stronger rods, bigger and brighter lures, and more. Although you can fish inshore on a dock, the big fish are offshore. Which you will need a boat to access. It is no doubt that saltwater fishing is expensive, and you must be 100% dedicated if you want to get anywhere. Just like freshwater fishing, there are tournaments hosted every year for the public. Although it is harder to find these events, there are a lot more participants. If you enjoy fishing on a large scale, saltwater fishing is for you. Say you can’t afford a top of the line fishing vessel. There are many charter services available to the public, but for a price. If you are planning on fishing for the rest of your life, look into purchasing a boat. If you are just interested in fishing for fun not so frequently, it probably won’t be worth buying a boat. Something to keep in mind when purchasing a boat is the expenses, even after you have the boat. Most saltwater vessels have to be stored somewhere for at least the winter season, and this can be expensive.
For the most part, saltwater fishing brands are the same as freshwater brands. But however, there are some differences and some brands unique to saltwater fishing. Some of these brands are AFTCO, Ahrex, and Ande. And then there’s those same brands like Shirmano, Abu Garcia, and Lews. As mentioned before, saltwater rods are similar to freshwater rods. The main difference is that saltwater rods are tougher built, are generally longer and heavier, and require heavier lures and line. And this is one of the many reasons why saltwater rods are more expensive than freshwater rods.
